COVID-19 and Opioid Addiction

Posted .

COVID-19 has been the source of great concern for Americans across the country, particularly those who are considered to be “high risk” for complications or death resulting from the virus. One high-risk category that has not received much attention, however, are those who are addicted to opioids.

While most immediately realize that smokers are at a higher risk of complications due to COVID-19, smoking is not the only drug that affects the respiratory system. In fact, people with an opioid use disorder are also at a higher risk of complications due to poor respiratory and pulmonary health. The fact that opioid abusers are also more likely to experience homelessness or to be incarcerated also increases their risk of contracting the virus.

The complications directly associated with COVID-19 are scary enough, but the situation is even worse for those who are addicted to opioids.
