Identifying Life-Threatening Injuries Following a Car Accident

Advanced Spine discusses the possible results of car accidents

Following a car accident, there are six major blunt trauma injuries that are potentially life threatening. These include:

  • Head injury: may result in brain damage and bleeding, with continuous bleeding potentially leading to blood clot formation and placing pressure on the soft brain tissue. Brain injuries may include concussion, contusion or laceration of the brain. Bleeding of the brain may be inside or outside of the brain, with both having the potential to cause severe damage.
  • Neck injury: common neck injuries include disk bulge and herniation, facet joint injury and subluxation of vertebra.
  • Penetrating chest injury: may include laceration or other injuries to the lungs, heart or major blood vessels.
  • Penetrating abdominal injury: may include laceration or slash of the abdominal aorta.
  • Fracture of skull, ribs and extremities: may involve severe twists of the body and leg, penetrating wounds of extremities, skull fractures and rib injury.
  • Dislocation of major joint: joints frequently dislocated in a car accident include the knee, hip, shoulder, wrist and elbow.
