What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that is caused by pressure being placed on the median nerve. The carpal tunnel itself is a narrow passageway that is surrounded by bones and ligaments on the palm side of the hand. When pressure is placed on the median nerve, it causes the nerve to be compressed and results in tingling, numbness and a general sense of weakness in the hand and arm. This condition is what is referred to as carpal tunnel syndrome.
What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is frequently caused by repetitive hand motions, though it can also be related to health problems and to the general anatomy of the wrist. In short, anything that squeezes or irritates the median nerve within the carpal tunnel space can lead to carpal tunnel syndrome. Often, there is not one single causes, but rather a combination of risk factors that contribute to the development of carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is more common in women as well as in those who are obese or who use certain types of medications.
Can Carpal Tunnel Syndrome be Treated?
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome can be treated in most people, with proper treatment usually reliving the tingling and numbness while also restoring wrist and hand function. To learn more about your treatment options, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab today!
