In 2015, nearly 13,000 people died from heroin use, with males between the ages of 25 to 44 having the highest heroin death rate at 13.2 per 100,000. This represents a 22.2 percent increase when compared to the previous year.
Risk Factors of Heroin Abuse
Past misuse of prescription opioids is one of the strongest risk factors for heroin use. Furthermore, the CDC has found that more than 9 in 10 people who use heroin used at least one other drug, with approximately 3 out of ever 4 reporting that they abused prescription opioids prior to using heroin.
