Many people have heard that strengthening their core muscles is beneficial when it comes to alleviate back pain, but did you know that there are many other benefits to having a strong core? Here is a look at just a few:

  • Improved Posture: Your core wraps around your entire torso, including your sides and your back. Therefore, strong core muscles will help you stay upright and improve your posture. Strengthening your inner core muscles is particularly helpful in this regard.
  • Increased Stability: A strong core also makes it easier for you to hold steady whenever you are engaging in an activity, resulting in improved stability. This, in turn, helps to reduce your risk of muscle injuries while working out as well as while engaging in everyday activities.
  • Improved Balance: Having strong core muscles also helps to improve your balance. After all, you are working from a body base that is more solid, which means it is easier for you to stay upright and steady on the ground. It also makes it easier for you to recover if you stumble.
  • Organ Protection: A strong core helps to protect your organs, including your spleen, liver and kidneys, all of which are right beneath your abdominal wall. Your core muscles act as a shield against outside forces, thereby helping to protect these organs from external forces and damage.

If you are ready to take control of your health and fitness, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab today! We will be happy to help you create a fitness routine that will help you achieve your goals, including strengthening your core and enjoying all of the benefits that a stronger core has to offer!

Being involved in a car accident can result in one of many different types of injuries, with some being more serious than others. One type of injury that you might endure are fractures to your eye socket. You may be surprised to learn that there are actually many different types of eye socket fracturs that may occur. These include:

  • Orbital Rim Fracture: A break to the outer edge of the eye socket. Since the orbital rim is very thick, it can only be broken by extreme force, such as that which occurs in a car accident. This extra force may also cause damage to muscles, nerves and the connective tissues in the eye.
  • Indirect Orbital Floor Fracture: Also referred to as a “blowout fracture,” this type of fracture usually occurs when an object hits you in the face. In a car accident, this most commonly occurs when a steering wheel hits you in the face. The resulting impact leaves a bony rim of the socket intact while also causing a hole in the floor of the eye socket. The resulting hole may trap nerves, muscles and other tissue, thereby making it difficult for the eye to move and causing vision issues.
  • Direct Orbital Floor Fracture: This type of fracture usually only occurs as a result of severe trauma and occurs when an orbital rim fracture extends to the orbital floor and causes a direct orbital floor fracture.
  • Trapdoor Fracture: This type of fracture usually only affects children due to the flexibility of their bones. This is another type of orbital floor fracture, but the bones flex outward and return to their normal position rather than actually breaking. This type of fracture may still lead to severe and even permanent damage.

If you have been involved in a car accident, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab to learn more about how we can help in your recovery process.

Made from either the poppy plant or synthesized in a laboratory, opioids are a broad group of pain-relieving drugs that help to alleviate pain by interacting with the opioid receptors in your cells. When these types of medications or illegal drugs travel through your blood, they attach to the opioid receptors in your brain cells, causing the cells to release signals to muffle your perception of pain while also boosting your feelings of pleasure. Given the positive effects that opioids have on pain receptors and feelings of pleasure, it is easy to understand why these drugs are so commonly abused.

Despite the sensation of “feeling good” that opioids create, they are actually quite problematic and even deadly. At lower doses, opioids can make you feel sleepy, but at higher doses, they can slow both your breathing rate and your heart rate. These effects are what ultimately lead to death. For this reason, it is especially important to follow your doctor’s prescription and advice when taking prescribed opioids for pain relief.

If you or someone you love is dealing with opioid addiction, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab to help. With our holistic approach toward treatment, our program addresses the psychological aspects of addiction as well as the physical. This is accomplished, in part, with the help of suboxone.

Part of a family of medications called “opioid antagonists,” which are the opposite of opioid agonists. As such, suboxone actually negates the “pleasant” effects of opioids by preventing them from activating pain receptors. This also helps to manage the symptoms associated with withdrawal. If you have been involved in a car accident and you have suddenly found yourself starting to suffer from migraines, it is possible that your condition is a side effect from the injuries that you sustained during your car accident. But what are the different types of migraines and how do you know if this what you are suffering from?

Migraine With Aura

Broadly speaking, there are two basic categories of migraines. The first is the migraine with aura. Once referred to as a “classical migraine,” this type of migraine includes visual symptoms such as seeing lines, shapes or flashes. Some migraine sufferers may also lose their vision for 10 to 30 minutes during the aura phase. You may also experience tingling in your arms and legs or you may experience changes to your smell, speech, taste and touch. Approximately one out of four migraine suffers experience auras, which typically start before the head pain begins and may last up to an hour.

Migraine Without an Aura

The other broad category of migraines is the migraine without and aura, which is also referred to as the “common migraine.” As the name implies, this type of migraine does not include the aura phase. You may, however, feel a pulsing or throbbing on one side of your head. You may also experience nausea as well as vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound.

To learn more about migraines and how they may affect you either before or after a car accident, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab today. We will be happy to help you explore you options for helping you to live a healthier lifestyle.

Sometimes simply referred to as “narcotics,” opioids are a type of drug that includes the illegal drug known as heroin as well as a number of prescription pain relievers. Some of these include tramadol, fentanyl, oxycodone and hydrocodone. While some are made from the opium plant, others are man-made synthetic drugs.

Regardless of home the opioid is made or manufactured, this class of drugs can result in a number of side effects. Some of these include mental fog, drowsiness, constipation and nausea. Slowed breathing is also a side effect of opioids and, in some cases, this can lead to death.

Recognizing the signs of an opioid overdose is one of the keys to helping to save someone who is in this situation. Some of the signs of an opioid overdose include:

  • Body goes limp
  • Skin feels clammy to the touch
  • Inability to speak
  • Purple or blue coloring to the fingernails or lips
  • Extremely pale face
  • Vomiting or making gurgling sounds
  • Slowed or stopped breathing
  • Slowed or stopped heartbeat
  • Inability to be awakened

If you recognize these signs in someone, it is essential to call 911 immediately in order to get help.

Clearly, addiction to opioids is a serious condition that can lead to numerous health complications and even death. To avoid these issues, it is essential to get treatment right away. If you or someone you love is struggling with opioid addiction, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab today to learn more about our suboxone-based treatment program and how we can help.

Developing a morning stretching routine is a great way to keep your body happy and healthy. While you may instinctively do a small stretch each morning when you first get out of bed, following a short by simply stretching routine each morning may allow you to enjoy all of these great benefits:

  • Decreased Lower Back Pain: The lower back can become compressed after being in the same position for an extended period of time, particularly if you sit a lot at your job. Morning stretches can help to prevent or even alleviate lower back pain.
  • Improving Mobility: Morning stretches help to keep your muscles flexible, which allows your joints to have a better range of motion. In turn, this improves your overall mobility while also reducing your risk for muscle strains and damage.
  • Improve Posture: Including stretches to focus on your back and chest muscles can help to loosen up your muscles, which will then help to make your posture stronger and more flexible.
  • Relieve Stress: The tension caused by stress can cause your body to feel overly tight, but stretching can help to alleviate this tightness while also getting your body prepared to start a less stress-filled day.
  • Reduce Aches and Pains: Your body feels achy in the morning because of the increase of fluid in your spinal discs and joints. Gentle stretches can help to alleviate this discomfort so you can get a positive start to your day.

If you are involved in a car accident, it is possible that you may need to undergo a blood transfusion. This potentially life-saving procedure helps to replace blood that was lost as the result of your injury. While blood transfusions typically occur without complications, there are a few complications that may result from this procedure. For example, you may experience an allergic reaction, resulting in hives, itching or a fever. It is also possible to develop a bloodborne infection, such as hepatitis B or C as well as HIV, though these complications are rare due to the extensive screening that takes place when blood is donated. Other potential reactions to a blood infusion include:

  • Acute immune hemolytic reaction: occurs when the immune system attacks the blood that you received because your blood type is not a good match. In this case, the attacked cells will release a substance into your blood stream that harms your kidneys.
  • Delayed hemolytic reaction: occurs when the immune system attacks the blood that you received because your blood type is not a good match, but occurs more slowly than acute immune hemolytic reaction. It generally takes anywhere one to four weeks for the decrease in red blood cell levels to be noticed.
  • Graft-versus-host disease: occurs when white blood cells attack bone marrow. This condition generally only occurs to people with a severely weakened immune system, such as in those who are being treated for lymphoma or leukemia. This condition is usually fatal.

The opioid epidemic is an issue that is ravaging communities all around the country. Unfortunately, since some types of opioids are legal and are used to help patients cope with pain, it is relatively easy for those who want to misuse opioids to get their hands on the drugs. In fact, opioids in the form of prescription drugs are most commonly obtained by simply raiding the family medicine cabinet or robbing local pharmacies. In some cases, they are also obtained through fraudulent prescriptions. So, what is being done about the opioid epidemic and how can you help?

The good news is that the government is working to address the opioid epidemic at all levels. This includes public servants, law enforcement personnel and public health officials, all of which have partnered with treatment professionals, educators and non-profit organizations to help bring awareness to the problem and develop strategies and solutions. Some of these strategies include providing targeted and proactive drug law enforcement, creating preventive programs, developing education campaigns and implementing a variety of intervention and treatment options.

You can also help with the epidemic by ensuring your prescription medications are properly locked up and out of reach of those who may misuse them. In addition, if you or a loved one is suffering from an opioid addiction, seek treatment immediately. At Advanced Spine & Rehab, we take a holistic approach to treatment that utilizes suboxone as a replacement for the opioid. Contact us today to learn more about our suboxone treatment program.

With school fully in session throughout most of the country, now is a good time to take a closer look at your child to ensure he or she is not experiencing any back pain or other back issues. After all, carrying around large, heavy backpacks can be a source of the aforementioned back pain. Of course, there are other potential causes of back pain in younger children and teens as well.

Back Pain in Younger Children

Generally speaking, younger children do not experience medically significant back pain and any discomfort that they have tends to be short-lived. Therefore, if a younger child is experiencing back pain, it is usually due to a more serious condition, such as a spinal tumor or an infection of the spine. Therefore, for younger children experiencing back pain, a medical examination should be completed.

Back Pain in Older Children

Since older children tend to be more aggressive in their activities and may also participate in sports or other activities that increase their risk of injury to the nerves, soft tissues and bones, back pain issues are more common than with younger children. Older children may also carry around heavy backpacks with school supplies, sports equipment or instruments for band or other activities. In addition to seeking chiropractic care for older children with back pain issues, you may also want to talk to your older child about minimizing activity in order to help expedite the healing process.

If you have a child who is experiencing back pain, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab today. We will be happy to conduct a thorough examination in order to come up with the treatment plan that is right for your child.

When involved in a car accident, you may experience a broken wrist as one of your injuries. Symptoms of this type of injury may include severe pain that worsens when gripping, squeezing or otherwise moving your hand or wrist, swelling, tenderness, bruising and an obvious deformity of the affected area, such as an oddly bent wrist. Unfortunately, if not treated properly, a broken wrist can lead to certain complications. Here is a look at a few.

Ongoing Stiffness or Pain

Ongoing stiffness, pain or a general achiness of the wrist is one potential complication of a broken wrist. While these side effects usually go away after the cast is removed or following surgery, some people have permanent stiffness or pain after breaking their wrist. Physical or occupational therapy may be needed to address this issue.

Osteoarthritis

If the fracture extends into a joint, it can cause arthritis to develop in your wrist even years later. If your wrist begins to swell or to cause you pain following the healing of the break, you may need to have it evaluated by your doctor.

Nerve or Blood Vessel Damage

The trauma to your wrist can also cause damage to the adjacent nerves and blood vessels, which may result in numbness or circulation problems. If you experience these complications, you should see immediate medical attention to have the issue addressed.

At Advanced Therapy & Rehab, we are committed to helping you heal. Contact us today to learn more about how we can help you address the injuries that you receive from a car accident.
