When it comes to the opioid crisis, many people fail to realize the impact that the veterinary care field can have on the issue. While many efforts have been made to educate physicians and dentists about opioids, veterinary clinics are another possible source of opioids that can be abused. Just as with humans, animals receive opioids to help them deal with pain. As such, veterinary clinics and veterinarians have to be registered with the US Drug Enforcement Administration in order to stock, administer, prescribe and dispense opioids. Unfortunately, research has shown that those who are addicted to opioids are using veterinary clinics as one resource for obtaining the drugs they desire.

So, how does this affect the opioid crisis and how does it impact animals? Sadly, a recent survey found that 13 percent of veterinarians know that an animal owner intentionally hurt an animal in order to obtain opioid medications. In addition, 44 percent were aware of opioid abuse or misuse by either a staff member or a client. Yet, only 62 percent felt they had a role in helping to prevent opioid abuse and 73 percent reported that their training in regard to opioid abuse or misuse was just fair, poor or nonexistent. Furthermore, 64 percent reported that they had never completed continuing education on best practices for prescribing opioids.

Clearly, while it is at no fault of an veterinarians who are currently in practice, not enough is being done to help regulate potential opioid abuse within the veterinary field. If you or someone you love is suffering from opioid addiction, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab to learn more about our suboxone program.

During these difficult times with COVID-19, we at Advanced Spine & Rehab would like to remind you that we are here for you, not only to take care of your health needs, but to also help provide the sense of normalcy and clam that you need to help you as you cope with the uncertainties that the virus brings.

As you may already know, SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19, is a virus that attacks the respiratory tract. While the exact fatality rate of the virus still remains unknown, it is believed to have a higher fatality rate than seasonal flu. In addition, it is possible to carry the disease without displaying symptoms, which means it can be easily and unknowingly passed from one person to the next.

Certain groups of people are at a higher risk of death if they contract COVID-19. These include those with respiratory conditions, cancer, diabetes and other underlying conditions. The same is true for the elderly or anyone with compromised lung function. Individuals who engage in certain activities, such as smoking, vaping or using other types of drugs are also at an increased risk of contracting the virus and experiencing serious complications.

Clearly, we are still learning more about COVID-19, but we at Advanced Spine & Rehab are dedicated to remaining current on this important pandemic so we can provide the most accurate information to each of our patients. If you have questions or concerns about COVID-19 or generally have medical issues that need to be addressed, contact us today to learn more about how we can help!

Skull Fracture Types and Symptoms https://www.advancespine.com/skull-fracture-types-and-symptoms/ Tue, 17 Mar 2020 02:10:53 +0000 https://advancespine.com/?p=1314 When involved in a car accident, it is possible that you may suffer from a skull fracture as one of your injuries.

When involved in a car accident, it is possible that you may suffer from a skull fracture as one of your injuries. The exact type of skull fracture you receive depends upon where your skull is impacted, the force of the blow and the shape of the object that impacted your head. While a pointier object may penetrate your skull, for example, a hard, blunt surface may not. Some examples of the types of skull fractures you may receive as the result of a car accident include:

 • Closed Fracture: Also referred to as a simple fracture, a closed fracture is one where the bone is fractured beneath the skin. In this type of fracture, the skin covering the fractured area is not broken or cut.
 • Open Fracture: Also referred to as a compound fracture, an open fracture is one where the skin over the broken area is also broken open and fractured bone can be seen emerging from the skull.
 • Depressed Fracture: A depressed fracture is one where the skull is indented or the fractured area extends into the brain cavity.
 • Basal Fracture: A basal fracture is a fracture that occurs in the floor of the skull. This may include the area around the eyes, nose, ears as well as at the top of the neck or near the spine.

A skull fracture may also be further classified as a linear fracture or a comminuted fracture. A linear fraction is one that breaks in a straight line while a comminuted fracture is one that is broken into three or more sections. Regardless of the type of skull fracture you have, you can count on Advanced Spine & Rehab to assist with your recovery process. Contact us today to learn more!

At Advanced Spine and Rehab, we are pleased to offer a variety of medical and health services to meet the needs of our patients. By taking a holistic approach that integrates both traditional Western medicine and chiropractic techniques, we are better able to address the individual needs of each of our patients. While we do offer a number of different services, here is a closer look at the top four services we provide.

Care for Auto Accident Injuries

After being involved in an auto accident, you may need assistance with your neck or spine. In some cases, your entire body may be out of alignment. Our trained professionals will locate the source of your troubles in order to prescribe the proper adjustments and corrective exercises to address the issue.

Chiropractic Adjustments

Whether you have been involved in an accident or you simply want to feel as good as possible, a chiropractic adjustment will help to ensure your spine is working harmoniously with the rest of your body. As part of our chiropractic adjustments, we will also help you create a plan that involves some light exercise and stretching, a healthy diet and ongoing chiropractic care to help you meet your health goals.

Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can be beneficial to just about anyone, but is particularly helpful to those who have been injured from an auto accident or playing a sport. It can also be beneficial to those who have been injured due to a work-related incident. At Advanced Spine and Rehab, we will work to help alleviate your discomfort while also working toward improving your overall level of health.

Opioid Addiction Treatment

Specializing in Suboxone treatment to address opioid addiction, our experts will create a complete treatment plan that includes the use of Suboxone along with counseling and psychological support so you can work toward getting better.

Opioid Addiction: How Does One Become an Addict? https://www.advancespine.com/opioid-addiction-how-does-one-become-an-addict/ Mon, 17 Feb 2020 00:05:48 +0000 https://advancespine.com/?p=1287 With worldwide misuse of prescription opioids and heroin, it is clear that opioid abuse is a serious issue.

The post Opioid Addiction: How Does One Become an Addict? first appeared on Advanced Spine & Rehab, P.C..

]]>
With more than 2 million Americans and around 15 million people worldwide misusing prescription opioids and heroin, it is clear that opioid abuse is a serious issue. In fact, more than 20,000 deaths in the United States were attributed to an overdose of prescription opioids in 2016 along with another 13,000 deaths resulting from heroin use. As such, drug overdose has become the leading cause of death among adults under the age of 50 in the United States, with opioids being responsible for about half of those deaths.

With so many deaths attributed to opioid abuse, it is only natural to wonder what causes this addiction. Unfortunately, there is not one simple “cause” that can be avoided in order to prevent abuse of opioids. Rather, opioid addiction is a complex issue that results from a combination of genetic, lifestyle and environmental factors. Those genes thought to be involved with opioid addiction are found in the endogenous opioid system, which is the body’s system for regulating pain and reward. It involves those opioid substances that occur naturally in the body, but opioid medications and heroin are able to exert their effects on these same receptors. Current research indicates that differences in the structure of these receptors influence how the body responds to opioids.

Of course, understanding how addiction occurs is only one component toward recovery. At Advanced Spine and Rehab, we utilize Suboxone along with other behavioral methods to help treat opioid addiction in a multi-faceted way. Contact us today to learn more!

At Advanced Spine & Rehab, we love to see our patients and help them to feel as good as possible while meeting their health and wellness goals. By truly listening to you and learning more about your health concerns, we are able to take a holistic approach toward improving your health and helping you meet your goals.

Whether you have been involved in a car accident or simply want to live a healthier lifestyle, we are sure we can help you achieve those goals. Of course, we don’t expect you to take our word for it. Just listen to the things that our patients have to say! For example, Ellie W., who underwent heart surgery in 1996, said, “When I started coming here, I couldn’t even do one mile on the exercise bike.” After working with Dr. Crimson she reports, “Now at home, I am up to five miles a day.”

Michael K. has a similar success story after seeing Dr. Graham. Michael says, “I tried numerous other doctors with no results.” After dealing with extreme weight loss, lack of appetite, back and stomach pains and nausea, Michael was able to regain his appetite, gain weight and reduce his back and stomach pains. Overall, he felt his “health had greatly improved.”

Sal and Catherine M. go on to say that “Dr. Crimson’s knowledge and overall bedside manner has allowed him to become a true friend to us and our entire family.” And, truly, that is exactly what we hope for with each and every one of our patient relationships. If you are ready to take control of your health with a medical team that wants to help you reach your goals, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab today!

At Advanced Spine & Rehab, we take pride in being able to help our patients with a variety of medical problems. Whether you are in need of chiropractic care, after-care following a car accident, or assistance with battling a drug addiction, we will take a holistic approach toward helping you achieve better health. With drug addiction, for example, we realize and recognize that a number of different factors may be contributing to your addiction. These include:

 • Genetics: Genes account for about half of your risk for addiction.
 • Mental Disorders: Suffering from a mental disorder increases your risk of drug addiction.
 • Biological Factors: Gender, ethnicity and other biological factors play a role in increasing your risk of drug addiction.
 • Environment: Family, friends, economic status, quality of life, history of abuse, early exposure to drugs and a variety of other environmental factors can increase your risk of addiction.
 • Developmental Stage: Your developmental stage at the time when you started using drugs can influence your addiction and how the drugs influence you.

By recognizing that there are a variety of different factors contributing to addiction, we take a holistic approach toward helping to address your addiction. In addition to utilizing a suboxone treatment program to address the physical aspects of addiction, we also help you explore environmental factors and other variables that contribute to your addiction. In this way, we help you address the underlying factors that contributed to your addiction in the first place. To learn more about our program and how we can help you achieve the best health possible, contact Advanced Spine & Rehab today!
